It is the tile job or the plumbing that cause water intrusion issues. ![]() That said Laticrete Hydrobarrier is a great product and for the $200 is more effective then a plastic barrier. The issue came into play when people were using green sheetrock which when exposed to water fails and does mold. To anyone who feels different you have to realize these roll on waterproofing systems are fairly new and showers have been constructed without them without issue. As a matter fact USG states the plastic is optional dependent on code. I agree 100% in waterproofing a shower as it is cheap insurance but the facts are that a simple plastic sheet underneath the proper substrate is all that is needed to redirect any moisture back into the pan. How can you get mold from a mold resistant product? Go to their sites and show me where they state ANY additional waterproofing is needed? This is the mfg not another Co trying to push their products. Hardibacker and Wonderboard are not waterproof but will not be damaged if wet. Now.hire a professional instead if you can afford it. This is an important step in order to make sure your grout will stay looking good. After the grout dries for a period of time you need to seal the grout lines and perhaps the tile as well. A haze will form on the tiles and you need to remove that too. ![]() After you think you have all of the grout off, you will find that you don't. After you have grouted the whole thing you need to remove the excess grout with clean water and clean sponges. Wipe the excess off of the tiles and continue. You work the grout into the grout lines with a float using an angled motion. You mix up your grout or use pre-mixed grout. After you have laid all of your tiles, including cutting any pieces around the edges, you should wait at least overnight before you grout. You use spacers to determine your grout lines between the tiles. You lay down your mastic in about 3 square foot areas and begin laying the tiles. Again you decide your layout and where you should begin. You should let this set up for a period of time. You screw the boards down at the seams and then mud the seams and use tape over them. Then you lay the 1/4" thick Hardibacker (cement board) with mastic. You decide your layout for the backer board making sure that stagger the boards so you don't have four corners meeting. If it's not you will want to rip off the old surface and make sure it is smooth and solid. ![]() You have to follow instructions very carefully and make sure the substrate is solid and secure.
